[February 2020] The Corning Rotary Club invites all students, families, and the general public to attend the Scripps Regional Spelling Bee, Saturday, March 28, 2020, beginning at 9:00 a.m. The Regional Bee will once again be held at Corning-Painted Post Middle School, 35 Victory Hwy, Painted Post, NY. The event, sponsored by the Corning Rotary Club, is free and open to the public.
This yearâs Bee boasts 60 student representatives from 30 area schools. Local school districts and homeschool organizations are conducting spelling bees for students in grades one through eight to identify one winner and one runner-up from each participating school.
The winner of the regional spelling bee advances to the 2020 Scripps National Spelling Bee. Corning Rotary Club, in partnership with Corning Natural Gas, Covanex, Inc., ServU Credit Union, Corning Credit Union, and other local sponsors supports the champion speller and one parent or guardian by paying expenses to travel to the Washington, D.C.-area competition, May 24-May 30, 2020.
âOur local sponsors are the foundation of the Bee,â said Paige Kimble, executive director of the Scripps National Spelling Bee. âThey make it possible for our program to have a positive impact on an estimated 11 million students.â
Participation in spelling bees improves studentsâ spelling and vocabulary skills and helps them develop poise â a necessary skill for success in public speaking, performing arts and athletics.
