[May 2020] The Rotary Club of Corning has recently welcomed two new members with deep Rotary connections.
Yumiko Akiba was born in Japan and arrived in the U.S. at the age of 14 with one of her sisters. After high school, she attended the University of Central Oklahoma, where she earned both a bachelor's and master’s degree in Applied Mathematics and Statistics. Yumiko taught mathematics to college and high school students for six years in Oklahoma, where she also volunteered as a translator for Rotary Club 29.
Yumiko moved to Corning in July 2018 to work as an Instructor of Mathematics at SUNY Corning Community College. She enjoys volunteering in the community and is excited to continue her Rotary journey in Corning as she practices the Rotary motto of "Service above Self".
Lionel Hutle recently moved to Corning from France with his wife. Lionel was formerly a member of a Rotary Club in France and has transferred his membership to the Corning Rotary Club. He is a trained chef and looks forward to opening a new restaurant in the local area sometime in the near future. In the meantime, Lionel volunteers with Rotary and Corning Meals on Wheels.
