Last week, March 22-24, the Corning Rotary Club collaborated with Cornell Cooperative Extension: Steuben County to organize a reading and agriculture program for over 250 second-graders. The program aimed to teach children about the origins of food and the significance of agriculture in our lives. The event was attended by 11 Rotarians, who assisted in both the reading and planting portions of the program.
The Rotarians involved in the event were Pauline Emery, Stu Sammis, Jan Harvey, Ray Defendorf, Gilbert Sweet, Jim Webb, Cathy Buck, Nora Smith, Ted Goldwyn, Ernie Danforth, and Bill Boland. Their participation was instrumental in making the event a success, as they helped to promote education, reading, and agriculture among the second-graders in attendance.
After the reading, the Rotarians assisted the children in planting tomato and basil seeds in their classrooms. This hands-on experience gave the students a chance to learn about the process of growing food and understand the effort that goes into producing the food we eat.
Overall, the event was a success, with both the Rotarians and the children enjoying the experience. The program not only promoted reading and education but also created awareness about the importance of agriculture and where our food comes from.
