Chris Walters Bio
For over a decade Chris has served as the Grants Manager & Gallery Curator for The ARTS Council of the Southern Finger Lakes. He’s currently Board Chair of Explore Steuben, on the Vestry at Christ Episcopal Church, and Treasurer for the PTA at Carder Elementary school where his two children attend school and where his wife Anne is a 3rd grade teacher.
Previously he worked overseas as the Country Director & Educational Programs Manager for an international non-profit. He holds a MA in International Educational Development from Columbia University, a BA in Interdisciplinary Humanities from the University of West Florida, and he completed two years of service as a Peace Corps Volunteer.
Through his portraits he strives to authentically document the people of New York’s Southern Tier. Using a participatory approach to empower people to shape their own narratives, he aspires to bring a dynamic vision of our community to the greater world. Recent works include From the Shadows at The Rockwell Museum, The Tradition Bearers at area libraries, and The Mighty Chemung at 171 Cedar Arts Center. He's represented by West End Gallery.
About The Public’s School
The Public’s School is a story of community building and belonging in the Corning-Painted Post School District. A response to recent attacks on public education, The Public’s School features 46 portraits of students, teachers, staff, and local alumni. It’s an affirming vision of the Corning-Painted Post School District and a testament to a central tenet of public education - all are welcome here. It will be on exhibit from November 4 - December 28 at the Southeast Steuben County Library in Corning. A reception will be held tonight, Thursday, November 7, from 5-7pm.
