June 20 2024 Club Meeting
Meeting called to order by President Dale at 12:20 following a pot roast lunch.

There were lots of visitors today aside from the families of the scholarship winners.  Greta Tomb introduced her guest, Barbara Richter,   Ted introduced his guest Steven Breinager, and Gil Sweet introduced his wife Harriett, and the wife of our new member. Gerry Britton.
 
Announcements:
  • Changeover Picnic McKinney Park Thursday June 30th at 5:30.  Sign up through ClubRunner
  • Mayor Boland asked fellow Rotarians to participate in the updating of the City Comprehensive Plan.  Bill noted that no update has been done in 20 years.
  • Mayor Bill also noted that the mayor of our sister city, Lviv, Ukraine had presented him with a book on the history of the Lviv Rotary club.  The history was passed on to Secretary Mani Kutty.
  • Cathy Buck, is recruiting door prizes and other contributions for the Camp Star Golf Tournament to be held on Monday, July 22nd.  She also noted that we will need a couple of volunteers to work the Dance party night at the Camp in August.  Contact Cathy with any donations.   
  • Cindy Long handed out a brochure for the Endless Mountain Music Festival. She noted that the free concert that has taken place on the ice rink the past couple of years will be held at CMoG this year on Sunday Aug 4th
  • Ted Goldwyn read several letters from the 2nd grade students from Winfield and Severn.  Clearly they appreciate our support.  
  • Stu Sammis reported that the Oktoberfest special event application is finally complete, and Andy will have all of the stuff ready to go out by first week of July.
New Member:  Gil Sweet introduced Dr. Dan Britton as a new member of the club.  He is originally fom Midland, Michigan.  Dan and his wife Gerry have been in the area since 1990.  Dan’s grandfather was in the Civil War and Dan has a story to tell.  Dan wants to serve the community and Gil says that he is a singer.  
 
 
Yumiko Akiba introduced our Scholarship winners for 2024.  In all $10,000 in scholarships was awarded.  
 
  • Patrick Thomas was the first announced recipient. He will be a graduate of the CPPHS.  His volunteering included: the Corning Wineglass Marathon 2021, Boy Scouts food drives, Finger Lakes trail cleanup, helping others with Eagle Scout projects, and the Corning Joint Fire District. Patrick’s educational goals include becoming a firefighter and a paramedic.    
  • Abigail Reppert was the second recipient.  She will graduate from CPPHS and was involved with the Youth Activation Committee (2021-2024) Class treasurer 2024, Children’s Ministry leader at Victory Highway Church, Special Olympics Polar Plunge, Wineglass Marathon, and the Corning-Painted Holiday Food drive. Abigail plans to pursue a career in Physical Therapy
  • Sofia Scouten was our third recipient.  She like all of the others will graduate from CPPHS.  Her service, includes singling with the Crystal City VFW Post 524 Honor Guard, Food/Personal care product collection for the Corning Food Pantry, and Volunteer coordinator of the mile 24 water station for the Wineglass Marathon. Sofia plans to pursue a degree in Biology and Zoology
  • Meagan Gensel was another CPPHS graduate.  Her service includes Head judge at the Elmira Youth Court, counselor at the Corning track and field summer camp, and volunteer at CMoG. Meagan wants to pursue a career in International business and minor in Foreign Language Spanish, in particular.
  • Christina Twiggs was our 5th recipient from CPPHS.  Her volunteer service list was long,  Choristers Club, Sister Cities Association of Corning, Order of Deaconess and Home Missioner, CPPHS Diversity, Equity, Inclucivity, and Accessibility Board, Corning Museum of Glass, CMoG teen leadership council, and USPS Stamp out Hunger Food Drive. Christina plans to pursue a profession in Science and Medicine
  • Christopher Russell–Rivera of CPPHS was the final scholarship recipient.  His service included Spencer Crest Nature Center, a playhouse for a girl with leukemia, 3D printing club at CPPHS, and the CMoG Leadership Council Christopher wants to pursue a career in public interest and government work
 
Congratulations to all of the scholarship recipients and thanks to all of the individuals who contributed to make this possible.
 
 
Exchange Student:  Ninon Rivera our exchange student from France presented a PowerPoint presentation that summarized her very eventful year as our Rotary exchange student. 
 
President Dale noted that this was his last regular meeting as president and admitted that it was pretty much what he expected.  Thank you, Dale, for your year of service. 
 
50/50:  Ted Goldwyn’s table won the $10 prize, but the $495.50 pot rolls on.
