A Big THANK YOU to the Sponsors and Community Supporters of the Scripps Regional Spelling Bee:

Louis Ferratella sent a THANK YOU letter to the Club for sponsoring and supporting him at the District 7120 Rotary Oratorical Speech Contest where he placed second.  Lou will be attending the May 4th Club Meeting.

Today's program was a spirited discussion of the different club committees and the various volunteers needed to make these committees work more effectively without anyone burning out from overwork. Anyone who wants to help on the various committees are definitely welcome. Our most critical need is people on the Community Service Committee.  Please connect with Dale Wexell to help with this team. Other needs are for someone to coordinate the Club Service Committee. Stacy Ward spearheads the Membership Committee. Laura Matson leads the Community Awareness Committee. Ray Defendorf organizes the International Committee.  Please connect with any of those people to help out with the important work that our club does.  If you missed the meeting, contact Andy for the viewing link.

Rotary International: World Water Day

Water is something we all need, and it’s essential for people to survive. But about 770 million people around the globe don’t have access to safe, clean water. That’s 1 person in every 10. Today, on World Water Day, we want to raise awareness about that and raise funds for projects to change it.

You can help The Rotary Foundation support member-led projects and activities that give people access to clean water, sanitation, and hygiene education and promote healthy societies.

What impact can your gift have? Donors like you have supported these sustainable, life-changing projects around the world:
  • Improving access to safely managed water in the Navajo Nation
  • Installing and expanding access to water and sanitation in Tanzania
  • Distributing clay water filters to communities in Brazil
  • Supplying clean water to 3,000 people in Papua New Guinea
  • Installing water filtration systems for schools in Lebanon
Your gift will help people gain access to clean water and better sanitation facilities in communities that need them. Please consider making a donation to The Rotary Foundation on this World Water Day.

Sincerely,
The Rotary Foundation

Corning Rotary Gives Grant for Smoke Detectors

Corning Rotary Gives Grant to Corning Fire District

Corning Rotary recently donated $5,000 to the Corning Joint Fire District.  Rotarian Jenniffer Mullen and President Stuart Sammis presented the check to Chief Brad Davies of the Corning City Fire Department, Chief Peter Bierwieler of the Forest View Gang Mills Fire Department and Chief Mike Brenning of the Corning Joint Fire District.

The grant will be used to purchase smoke detectors targeted toward low income homeowners who find the cost of the new 10-year smoke detectors prohibitive.  The Joint Fire Districts will be working with local and regional school and support agencies to identify such homeowners.  The smoke detectors will be installed by members of the Fire Departments to ensure safe placements, as allowed.  Installation instructions will also be given to assist homeowners who want to do the installations themselves.

This grant is awarded as part of the club’s Community Health and Safety initiative. Other core focus areas include literacy, youth leadership, hunger, environment and international efforts. This is the first partnership and grant between Corning Rotary and the Joint Fire District.
