THE STORIES OF CORNING ROTARY

Club Meeting: 12 21 23

President Dale Wexell opened the meeting at 12:20 pm.

Club Services:
  • Invocation: Ernie Danforth
  • Photographer: Rick Davis [photos here]
  • Song Leader: Ernie Danforth (“My Country ‘Tis of Thee”)
  • COGS: Tom O’Brien
Visitors and Guests: Yumiko brought exchange student Ninon Rivera. Stu Sammis introduced Danielle Strom as guest.

Invocation: Ernie Danforth recited from memory Clement C. Moore’s “T’was the night before Christmas…;” with some minor local variations.... His performance was near perfect, and earned him a standing ovation from the members. 🎥 00:14

Announcements:

President Dale informed the members that the board met and decided to keep the terms of officers and directors at 1 year.

Dale also notified the members that the club will hold its International Dinner at the Double Tree Hotel on April 13, 2024. In October 2024, the members will hold an OctoberFest at the Corning Ice Rink at a date and time to be determined.

Dale informed the members that luncheon arrangements for regular Thursday lunch meetings will be handled, substantially, as they have been recently. Details may change as the hotel's capabilities change.

Deacon Ray Defendorf announced that the club will need sponsors and helpers in order to finance and conduct the International Dinner in 2024. At the present time the International Committee is approximately $4000 short of the cost for the dinner. Ray also said that the sewing machines purchased as part of the Global Grant Project cost approximately $180 each and that he has been receiving quite a few pledges for the machines so far.

Paul Harris Recognition: Ted Goldwyn, John Brown, Les Rosenbloom, and various others  participated in the presentation of a citation to Dr. Dale Wexell in recognition of Dale’s work towards better understanding and friendly relations between peoples of the world.

Program: Yumiko Akiba gave a presentation to the club concerning the workings and benefits of the Rotary Scholarship program. Yumiko compared the costs of education at various educational institutions to demonstrate the benefits that a Rotary Scholarship can provide. Yumiko plans to raise funds to help finance the Rotary Scholarships through fund raising and contributions to the Rotary Scholarship that is held by the Community Fund.

Fundraising:
  • Dr. Wexell reminded the members that there will be a pancake dinner fundraiser on February 1, 2024 to support Scholarship.
  • Dr. Wexell suggested that members play a game of “Say What” to help Yumiko raise funds for the Rotary Scholarship program. By the end of the game Yumiko had made a good start on her fundraising.
  • With respect to the 50-50, no one won the big 50-50 prize, but the $9 sure-win prize went to… guest Danielle Strom.

Hosting Visiting District Governor Electeds
For 50 years the 7120 District has welcomed all DGE's who are attending training in the US prior to taking on their duties as District Governors.

The past three years this has been forfeited due to COVID.  This year we have four couples representing Bali, Indonesia, Pakistan and two from India.

We are planning for the visit from January 12th through the 15th after which we will transfer our guests to the Rochester area for further entertainment and visits.

The picture is of DGE Suzana Chandra and her husband Octavius Tjiantor of the Rotary Club of Bali and they will have John and Margo Brown as their hosts.
Reading to the Severn Students

What could be more fun than reading to 2 kindergarten classes at Severn? Also having another program with the whole second grade! The students loved the stories - which were accompanied by antics provided by stuffed animals and more, in the Severn multipurpose room. After the stories, books were handed out to the students.

Thank you to Jordyn and Pauline Emery and all the others from the schools and Corning Rotary Literacy Committee that help with this wonderful program of Rotary helping with community literacy.

Personal Care Bags for Dayspring Residents
On December 12th Rotarians got together to make up gift bags of toiletries for residents of Dayspring Apartments. This project was in response to an appeal from the Corning Food Pantry for help. The Rotary Club purchased supplies including toothbrushes, tooth paste, shampoo, soap, chap sticks, a scrubbie and a bag of Skinny Pop Popcorn. This project was organized by Stu Sammis.

Stu Sammis and Jan Harvey did the actual shopping. They were joined by Ernie Danforth, Dale Wexell and Andy Rochester as well as two other people to put the bags together.

A total of 72 bags were made up, then were then delivered to Corning Food Pantry to be included in their special distribution for the residents. Corning Rotary continues its commitment to Service Above Self - for our community.
