Club meeting 8-17-2023

Following a delicious buffet lunch of roast beef, potatoes and corn, President Dale Wexell called the meeting to order at 12:10 PM. All present sang My Country ‘Tis of Thee and recited the Pledge of Allegiance, after which Pauline Emery gave the invocation.

Club Service providers for this meeting were:

Announcements:

Ted Goldwyn announced that Corning Rotary's Camp STAR Night was held this past Monday at The Y at Watson Woods. Ted was joined by his wife Maria, along with Cathy Buck and Pauline Emery at the event. Bob Cole, who serves as medical advisor for the Camp, was also present. Our Club has sponsored the Monday night pizza and DJ dance party for many years, and it is always eagerly anticipated by the camp attendees. Bobby K Entertainment once again provided the musical entertainment free of charge. Camp STAR is an amazing program that makes a positive impact on the campers and their families. Please continue to support this special program through your gifts of time and treasure.

Birthdays for August! President Dale listed the names of Rotarians celebrating an August birthday, which can be found on the right side of our home page, and we collectively wished them all a happy happy!

RYLA Student Presentation:

Ted Goldwyn introduced Christina Twiggs and McKenna Roth, the two Corning-Painted Post High School students who represented our Club at the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards camp this year, held from June 25-29 on the FLCC Canandaigua campus. We typically host only one student to RYLA each year, so we were very fortunate to have these two amazing and ambitious students representing our Club this year.

McKenna and Christina shared a presentation with photos from their camp experience. Highlights included a variety of team-building and leadership development events, a juggler, team song creation, a free-standing tower activity, a guest speaker from the Relief Corps, and a guest speaker on solar power. They also engaged in an enlightening diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) session and activities focused on self-care and mental health. Key takeaways for the students included learning what makes a true leader, what makes a good team, the importance of DEI, actions and their consequences, various styles of leadership, teamwork and team bonding, and learning about Rotary's mission and values. You really need to watch the video to capture the full impact and tone of their poised and mature presentation.

Video will be available next week.

Program:

Bridgett Stewart, from the Watkins-Montour Rotary Club, Assistant DG for our area, introduced our speaker, District 7120 District Governor, Julie Carney, who shared her goals for the year.

Check out the video for full details next week.

Rotary Night at Camp Star

Camp STAR's Corning Rotary Night was held August 14th at The Y at Watson Woods. Ted was joined by his wife Maria, along with Cathy Buck and Pauline Emery at the event. Bob Cole, who serves as medical advisor for the Camp, was also present. There was a wonderful turnout, with 50+ campers and 20+ counselors.  The campers danced the night away to Bobby K DJ music. Rotary volunteers provided pizza and juice boxes for refreshment. There was rain, but that didn’t stop the fun. We just moved the party inside.   Fun was had by all!

Shepherd's Table at Salvation Army

Salvation Army provides many community services -- one of them is the Sunday Shepherd's Table. Each week, an organization donates the food and preparation of the meals. August 13th was Corning Rotary's turn. With financial donations from a number of Rotarians, along with main course from Andy and Karen, Apples from Cathy and super decorated cookies from President Dale, we had a nice tasty meal for the diners.

Helping out in the kitchen were volunteers from Salvation Army and Rugmani (Mani) Kutty and her daughter. We made 42+ dinners and also had donations for the ongoing food services of Salvation Army. Thank you to all!!  Corning Rotary is thankful to be able to continue its long tradition of providing Service Above Self, working with other organizations, to members of the community in the greater Corning area. Here's more information about Salvation Army.
