Club Meeting 10-20-2022

WELCOME: President Stu opened the meeting at noon at The Center, 400 Park Ave., South, with Ernie Danforth leading “My Country ‘Tis of Thee “; followed by the Pledge of Allegiance,” and the 4-Way Test. There were at least 31 members present at the meeting, plus numerous guests and four or five members who participated by ZOOM.
 
ANNOUNCEMENTS:
  • Stu announced with sadness, that Clint Janes has passed away. There will not be a memorial service, but Stu invited members to send sympathy cards to Clint’s wife, Lois.
  • Dave Anderson said he saw Rich Fastiggi up and around, walking around in recovery mode. He said Sam Sanfratillo is receiving treatments at home.
  • Wendy Winnett reminded people that World Polio Day has come and gone, but she encouraged members to make a contribution to Rotary International. The Gates Foundation will match contributions to the cause.
  • Stu said that Rotary and the municipalities of Corning, Painted Post, and Erwin will give away and install smoke detectors for those who request them.
  • Rick Davis welcomed Ray Defendorf back from the hospital, where Ray made a brief appearance last week.
 
NEW MEMBERRay Defendorf introduced Harrie J. Stevens as a new member of the Club. Harrie has had a long relationship with Rotary in other cities, and the members gave him a warm welcome.
 
GOOD NEWS BUCKS - there were a surprising number of claimed birthdays, including Ray’s, Gil’s grandson’s, Les’s, Polina’s, and various relatives of Ted Goldwyn’s.
 
50-50 - Stu suggested that the 50-50 might be delayed, but Les was not to be denied. He threw in a dollar, but no winner was announced.
PROGRAMTed introduced Dave Quackenbush, the lead Teacher, Humanities at the Corning High School Learning Center. Dave explained how the High School Learning Center works, and he introduced five students who explained their experiences with the program. Dave said he has been with the program since its inception, twenty years ago. He and the five student-guests explained how students receive credits for community work, among other things.
