We all know if you want something done quickly, smoothly, happily and successfully, just ask our women members to take on the job. Well, March is Women's History Month. Women joined the Rotary Club in 1989, and the club selected its first woman President in 1994, Ann Clarke. She was followed by Nora Smith (1998), Cathy Randall (2002), Laurie Charlton (2004), Susan O'Leary (2010) and our own Michele Donegan in 2013. There are currently 30 women members in Corning Rotary. So at the next meeting say 'Happy Women's History Month' and 'thanks' to our women members for their contributions to our club.
For the second year in a row the Corning Rotary Club presented the annual Regional Spelling Bee held March 7th at the Campbell-Savona Senior High School. This year a record 53 conteststants competed for a trip to the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington DC on May 28 and 29.
The winner was Sriram Hathwar, a 9th grade student at the Alternative School for Math and Science in Corning. Sriram won last year’s competition as well. He wins an all expense paid trip to the national competition.
A team of Rotarians supported the event including Deb Joseph (organizer), Dick Pope (organizer), Wendy Winnett, Pauline Emory, Nancy Shaffer, Bill Boland and Micele Donegan (Judge.) Thanks also to Trish Rossettie (niece of Rotarian Mike Rossettie) for 'beeing' willing to help out.
The Corning Rotary Club is the Lead Sponsor of a First Responders Park to be located on the campus of Corning Community College. The Park will honor and remember First Responders from the college's 3 county service area--Chemung, Schuyler, and Steuben Counties, New York.
The Park will feature beds of engraved pavers dedicated to First Responders--those persons who rush to save life, limb and property from harm. They include among others--firefighters, police, emergency medical technicians, fire police, security guards, rescue squads, life guards, ski patrollers, and those persons who back them up at their home bases--the dispatchers, ER medics, and emergency management and 9-1-1 personnel.
The Park design is by Fagan Engineers of Elmira and will be constructed in the summer of 2014 by the Steuben County Department of Public Works. Donations are being accepted from Major Sponsors ($2,500 level, Sponsors ($500 -- $1,000 level) and Individuals ($100 level) to cover the cost of materials. Donations will be recognized by appropriate sized engraved pavers.
Dedication is scheduled for Patriot Day, September 11, 2014.

Fellow Rotarian Shirley Magana, CEO of the Corning Hospital since 2008, was thrilled to talk about the new hospital under construction in East Corning, just down the hill from Rotarian Tony Spychers¹
This $142 million project will have 221,000 sq. ft. and all 65 rooms will be private, each containing sleep sofas and other amenities. Shirley described all the new equipment like MRI, CT scanner, PET scan and linear accelerator, all stateof the art. Outpatients will comprise 75% and a three day stay is anticipated for inpatients.
In addition to the five more expansive OR¹s there will be two procedure rooms and an eight bed ICU. The ER will have two fast track rooms in addition to 18 treatment rooms. An 18,000 sq ft cancer center will be attached.
Shirley showed views of the inside: the entrance, the cancer center, a patient room and an obstetric room, all designed for the comfort of the patients and their family.
