Announcements and Happy Dollars:
This week, Corning Rotarians gathered at Carey's Brew House for a delicious served lunch and fellowship.
Cathy Buck announced that the Club has received a $500 donation from a friend, Jody in recognition of Ray Defendorf's long-time service to the Club and International Committee
Wendy Winnett thanked all those who donated to the Rotary Foundation March Madness pool. Ernie Danforth won the grand prize, a really snazzy floor lamp.
Also, Wendy announced we have achieved our Annual Fund goal for the year!
Ray Defendorf announced that District Governor Julie Carney loved the international project video created by Andy Rochester, and plans to share it at the District Conference.
Stu Sammis announced that the Oktoberfest event is moving full speed ahead. He is working with the City of Corning's Parks and Recreation Department on logistics.
Stu also donated $70 to the Rotary Foundation in honor of his 70th birthday. Happy Birthday, Stu, and thank you for your generosity!
Jen Batzing announced that on Thursday, May 2, from 5:30 - 7:30 pm, the Corning-Painted Post School District will present "Community Conversations," a discussion led by our local high school students about what community looks like in their school. Attendees will also hear from elementary and middle school students on how they cultivate belonging and community in their buildings.
Al Lewis donated $50 in honor of his 50th wedding anniversary. Congratulations, Al!
Cory Walker reminded us of the upcoming joint social get-together with the Corning Area Young Professionals (CAYP), to be held on Wednesday, April 24, 5:30 - 7:00 pm at The Office Pool and Libations at 70 W. Market Street (next door to Sorge's). For your $10 paid at the door (cash, please!) you will get to partake in delicious light appetizers and fellowship. Attendees may purchase their own beverages from the well-stocked bar.
No program, but Marianne Kalec, Horseheads Rotarian and Treasurer of Camp STAR shared a video (produced by former Corning Rotarian Michelle Donegan's daughter Abby Ruggles, an assistant director at the Camp) and gave an update on Camp STAR. This year, the Camp will be held from August 11-17 at the Y at Watson Woods. The Camp STAR Golf Tournament will be held on July 22. Last year, this event raised over $25,000 toward the Camp. Expenses run around $36,000, so Marianne is asking for everyone's help this year. There are many opportunities to sponsor the golf tourney, donate raffle prizes, host a golf foursome, or volunteer at the Camp (Save the date! Corning Rotary's Dance Party will be held on Monday, August 12).
The trees of the Rotary Cherry Blossom Trail in Denison Park are in full bloom, and they are a sight to behold. In their 3rd season, it is clear to see the development of their beauty. The trail was Corning Rotary's contribution to the community on the occasion of the club's 100th anniversary.
If the past is a good prognosticator, the blossoms will last about two weeks.

The trailhead is located on Market Street Extension. Coming out of town toward Gibson on Denison Parkway, at the last light, turn left onto Conhocton Street, then take the first right onto Market Street Extension. You'll see the big "Rotary Cherry Blossom Trail" sign on the right. Easy parking on the street.
