Call for Volunteers

🐝 It's time for the Annual Corning Rotary Spelling Bee at Campbell Savona School!  We'll need volunteers to cover a number of areas [see signup areas linked to this] :   Registration, Ushers/Greeters, Bees etc.

Please sign up right away by clicking the BLUE BOX at left. More information will be provided as the date approaches.

Bring a friend [sign them up] -- community members are welcome as volunteers. And they'll get to be part of:  "We are Rotary. We are People of Action."

When: Saturday April 12 I would recommend people bring a filled reusable water bottle to reduce plastic liter/waste. We will bring vests for identification, garbage bags, gloves for everyone, and some garbage picker sticks for use. If you have one - please bring it.

Where: Meet at Corning Wegmans, and park along the levee, closer to the Bridge Street Bridge. We will meet at the parking lot, and walk up behind Wegmans towards the Benjamin Patterson Bridge. We will start there, and walk to the Bridge Street Bridge along the river, and perhaps further depending on the energy of the group and the weather. The weather looks cool right now – 43 and cloudy. We typically do this even if it is drizzly, but we will cancel if it is thunder and lightning.

What: We will be cleaning up trash, bagging it (we will provide the bags). We're checking with City of Corning regarding the disposal of the trash we find. Tentatively, we can pile it up under the Benjamin Patterson Bridge, and they can pick it up in a truck and haul it off.

• How: Please REGISTER by clicking on the MEMBERS [Rotarians] or GUESTS [non-Rotarians]  blue boxes on the left side of this page.
• Wear long pants and hats to reduce bug/tick issues OR spray bare legs and boots with bug spray.
• It is recommended that participants wear boots, as it may be muddy, and a hat for the sun.
• Please bring workgloves (we also have work gloves – but they are big).
• We will give a short safety talk about picking up trash, and will need everyone’s waivers completed prior to beginning; fill it out at the event.
• Its a good idea to wear clothes you don’t care about, because it is a dirt job after all! 😊

Why: We are cleaning up the riverside on the northside of the River in Corning because that area sees a lot of people walking, and we get a lot of litter under the Bridges. We are looking to reduce this pollution, as it ultimately gets into our water systems, and cleaning up the Chemung River Watershed keeps us healthy and our community beautiful!

UPDATE: there is no charge to attend the event.

Light hors d'oeuvres and drinks included.

There will be a workday at the Kate Danforth Community Garden on April 26^th from 9 - 12.  There is lots to do including a general clean up, bed repair, organizing a composite site, etc.

Signup - bring a friend! Community members are welcome to signup. 

We'll be meeting at the CareFirst Memorial Talli Sutton Butterfly Garden. First, there is a work party to establish the garden. Then! A social gathering at Carey's Brewhouse at 5:30PM. Come and participate in either or both.

🪻 If you want to help build the garden, please use the signup link. Please wear appropriate garden attire. We will be planting flowers & shrubs in the pre-tilled earth, then spreading mulch. After the planting, there is a social event at Carey's.

🥤 If you're coming to the social, no need to sign up -- just come to Carey's Brewhouse at 5:30 pm!

This is a great opportunity to work with United Way, through their Day of Action, to assist Corning Meals on Wheels. Also, a chance to see how their operation assists people -- you may find yourself becoming a volunteer again in the future! There's a special place in my heart for Meals on Wheels - my Mom, Penny Rochester, and Helen Lanning founded Meals on Wheels.

Here's the detail:

• Time: 9 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.
• Location: 144 Cedar St, Corning NY 14830
• Activity:
  • Volunteers will help with two stages of our daily operation.  The volunteers will assist our cook with packing the day's meals for delivery.  Then the volunteers, split into two teams, will deliver meals to the seniors we serve.

Kathleen Hallinan will speak on obesity and the fat drugs being used currently. 

• we are allowed 2 Rotarians (friends and family included) to work a shift
• we will be given a donation of $10 per hour for each shift covered.
• all total, we should be able to earn over a $2500 donation for 3 days of service.
• also, each volunteer is given a general admission ticket to give them entry to the track on other days when they are not volunteering.
• once a Rotarian is signed up, I will make arrangements to get the general admission ticket to them. Great opportunity for all those "wanna be" race fans, lol. 

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE....... the race is coming soon and I have 40+ positions to fill. Some Rotarians may want to sign up for more than one shift and/or day. That is a perfectly acceptable.

Camp Star appreciates all the time and energy to keep the camp going strong.

Camp STAR night at Watson in the Woods [formerly Watson Homestead]: Camp Star night is Monday August 11th. Corning Rotary Sponsors a pizza and dance party in the evening. About 5 volunteers are needed from 6:30 until 8:00 to help serve the campers pizza and get them engaged in the dance party. This is such a fun volunteer experience!  And it is a great opportunity for families to pitch in together!

We’ll enjoy a round of mini golf (covered by the Club), with additional activities like laser tag, the driving range, batting cages, and water wars available for those who want to keep the fun going (pay-as-you-play).

Food and treats are available for purchase on-site: hot dogs, hamburgers, fries, milkshakes, ice cream, and more.
